Eligibility Criteria for the Certificate of Naturalization

A certificate of naturalization gives an individual, the right to call himself as a citizen of the United States of America. This means that the individual who holds the certificate of naturalization is entitled to exercise  his rights and enjoy all the benefits provided by the state to its citizen. Application for such a certificate has some eligibility criteria, which needs to be met. We have tried to have a holistic view of it not sticking oneself to the legal angles only.
To begin with one needs to have lived into the US for a certain period of time. This time period depends on the type of application one is applying under. The rationale behind this criterion is to check whether the candidate is suitable to live in the US society, the best of which can be demonstrated by the fact that he had been able to do it in the past.
It also needs to be kept in mind that only staying is not enough. One needs to have continuous stay or residency during the period of time applicable to his case. The legal requirements are a minimum of five years stay. One can go abroad in the period but the length of such trips should not extend beyond six months in one go.

Also, one needs to be morally committed to the state and his fellow citizens. This means that his legal record should be clean and free from any kind of involvement in criminal activities. Every year certain applications are rejected on such grounds as no country wants to admit criminals in their US Citizenship list.

Other than this, one should also be free from any kind of civic liabilities. This would ideally mean that the candidate should be free from any kind of unpaid dues towards the state, which could be in form of taxes, fines etc. if one proves himself as a law abiding citizen, it expedites the whole application process for getting the cerificate of naturalization . Lastly one needs to display faith and belief in the US constitution and should respect the rules laid down under it.

If an applicant meets all the above said criteria and wants to apply for US citizenship, then he can apply by sending a duly filled form to the USCIS for a certificate of naturalization, Form
N -565 . After the form is processed and verified, the certificate will be issued by the department of homeland security after a ceremony in honor of you being a US citizen.
