Mississippi River

Mississippi River is the largest river system in North America. Flows entirely in the United States, and the rise of this river in the state of Minnesota Bank and slowly meanders south for 2530 miles (4070 km) to the Mississippi River Delta in the Gulf of Mexico. With numerous tributaries, watersheds in the Mississippi River drains all or parts of the U.S. states and 31 of the Rocky Mountains, Appalachian and even up to southern Canada. Longer than the Mississippi River ranks fourth and the tenth largest among the world's rivers.

For at least 10,000 years, Indians have lived along the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Most of the hunters or shepherds, but some, like the builders of the hill to form associations and agricultural wealth. The arrival of Europeans in the 1500s changed forever the way of life as the original explorers first, then the settlers ventured into the basin in increasing numbers. The river served as the first barrier - forming the border of New Spain, and France's new, and the beginning of the United States - then the vital artery of transportation and communication link. In the 19th century, during the height of our destiny, formed the Mississippi and its tributaries, several western, most notably the state of Missouri, and the paths of the pioneers involved in the expansion of the western United States.
Consists of thick layers of silt and deposits of this river, the Mississippi River Valley is one of the most fertile agricultural areas in the country and as a result came the era of the rise of the river the ship decks. During the American Civil War, saw the state of Mississippi by the capture of Union troops, a turning point towards victory because of this very important route for trade and travel, not least to the Confederacy. Due to the significant growth of cities, and larger ships and boats which replaced the Riverboats, the decades that followed witnessed the 1900s works of applied engineering and extensive river system, such as construction in many cases, combination locks and barriers and dams.
Since modern development in the basin began, saw the state of Mississippi also has its share of problems of pollution and the environment - and most of the large volumes, particularly of agricultural drainage water, which led to the Gulf of Mexico dead zone off the Delta. In recent years, showed a shift towards a steady river channel in the Atchafalaya River Delta; and a change of course would prove disastrous to ports like New Orleans. System of dams and gates held so far in the state of Mississippi in the Gulf, but due to the processes of the river becomes more likely each year.
