Missouri University

The University of Missouri  is located in Columbia, Missouri. The university was founded in 1839. It was the first public university west of the Mississippi River. The university is a diverse school because their students come from every county in the state, all over the country, and virtually all over the world. They offer more than 270 degree programs in many fields .

The Missouri legislature passed the Geyer Act to get money to fund the university. The board of curators stopped operations of the university. The residents of Columbia formed a "home guard" unit and it became known as the "Fighting Tigers of Columbia." In 1890, a former University of Missouri student suggested that the new football team be called the "Tigers."

he Tigers are members of the Big 12. Their colors are black and old gold. The university offers many sports including some of the non-traditional sports like gymnastics, lacrosse and wrestling.
Missouri plays their football on Faurot Field before crowds of about 68,000. The basketball games of men and women are played at the Mizzou Arena. The men's basketball team has 21 NCAA tournament appearances .The university has the biggest library in Missouri..
